A little history of St. Peters Lutheran Church
The roots of St. Peters can be traced to the church records of the small towns and villages in the Province of Mecklenburg Germany. The close-knit family ties were brought with them, when many of them immigrated starting in the 1850s That close bond was evident in the founding of St.Peters. The list of the original 32 charter members contains five sets of brothers and numerous relationships through marriage. Descendants of those 32 charter members are still attending services at St.Peters and 22 of the 32 charter members are buried in the church cemetery. On February 19 1880 a group of worshipers who lived in Ira twp. that attended services at St. Pauls Lutheran in Peters, Michigan voted to build a school that could also be used as a church. The sum of $150.00 was paid for the purchase of a piece of land and the building was erected and dedicated on November 14,1880. Services were held once a month for the Ira Twp. worshipers by Pastor Rehn of St.Pauls. The school was closed by St. Pauls in 1881 which disappointed the southern group. On May 1,1881 the southern group met again and decided to form their own congregation called the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St.Peter. Their first minister was Rev. Samuel Kuesthardt of Custer,Ohio. The building of the present church was started in the spring of 1896 and on February 7 1897 the first service was conducted. The only part of the construction that was not done by the congregation was the laying of the foundation; the total cost of construction and furnishings was $2459.23. In 1961 the old schoolhouse was sold and the present fellowship hall was added next to the church for Sunday school and church functions Many changes have occurred at St.Peters since the 1880s but one thing remains constant it is the faith and trust in God.
